The Challenge
A provincial workers’ compensation board identified a need to improve how it delivered on complex, strategic initiatives. Without a centralized Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO), they struggled with fragmented project management practices, leading to inconsistent project delivery, unclear roles and responsibilities, and challenges in resource allocation. These issues were further compounded by difficulties in aligning projects with the organization’s broader strategic goals, resulting in inefficiencies and an inability to effectively track and manage progress across multiple projects.
The Solution
To address these challenges, our team developed and provided implementation support for a customized EPMO which also serves as a project management Centre of Excellence across the organization. The solution began with a comprehensive assessment of the current project management practices and capabilities, identifying key gaps and areas for improvement. Based on these insights, we designed a robust EPMO resource and operating model tailored to the organization’s specific needs. This model included clear governance structures, defined roles and responsibilities, and standardized processes to ensure consistency and alignment across all projects. We also provided the necessary tools, templates, and training to facilitate a smooth implementation, empowering the EPMO’s independent and long-term operations. A detailed implementation roadmap was developed to guide the rollout of the EPMO, ensuring seamless integration into existing operations.
A centralized EPMO, improving project governance, resource management, and strategic execution
The Results
The EPMO provides a centralized governance framework that enhances project delivery consistency and ensures alignment with the board’s strategic objectives. Clear roles and responsibilities within the EPMO improve accountability and resource management, leading to more efficient project execution. The use of standardized tools and templates that are right sized for the organization will facilitate better project tracking and reporting, allowing the organization to monitor progress and make informed decisions in real-time. Overall, the EPMO will enable the organization to achieve greater operational efficiency, improve project outcomes, and successfully execute on its strategic initiatives, positioning the organization for long-term success.
